![]() ![]() When reading this memoir, it feels like you’re peeking into someone’s journal. Like most memoirs, this one does have chapters and headings, but what Heart Berries does differently is that it isn’t a neatly edited and cohesive narrative of the author’s life. I was not expecting the book to get so grim, but that didn’t stop me from devouring every word. Heart Berries is a devastatingly beautiful memoir of Mailhot’s experience with a traumatic break-up, mental illness, and growing up on an Indian Reservation. My experience reading Heart Berries was the latter. There are two things that people generally experience when they read memoirs: either you relate to their experiences or you gain a new perspective. Not that I don’t enjoy novel anymore, my Gemini rising and venus is just super nosy. Since I’ve entered adulthood, I’ve noticed that I’ve been reading less fiction and more memoirs and self-help type of books. ![]() “When you told me that I want too much, I considered how much you take.” ![]()
